Step-by-step guide to becoming a hospital (medical) social worker — education, licensing (LMSW/LCSW), core skills, and how to get hired.
What Hospital Social Workers Do
Hospital (medical) social workers help patients and families navigate serious illness, hospitalization, and discharge. They complete psychosocial assessments, arrange post-acute care, connect families to resources, and provide crisis and grief support — all within a fast-paced interdisciplinary team.
Step 1: Earn the Right Degree
Most hospital roles require a Master of Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited program. A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) can qualify you for some entry-level case-management roles, but the MSW opens the door to clinical positions and advancement.
Step 2: Get Licensed (LMSW → LCSW)
After your MSW, you will typically obtain the LMSW to begin practicing. To provide independent clinical services — including diagnosis and therapy — you will pursue the LCSW, which requires supervised clinical hours and passing the clinical ASWB exam. Many hospitals hire LMSWs and provide the supervision you need to reach LCSW.
- Complete a CSWE-accredited MSW
- Pass the ASWB exam for your level
- Obtain LMSW licensure in your state
- Accrue supervised hours toward the LCSW
Step 3: Build the Skills Hospitals Want
- Discharge planning and care coordination
- Psychosocial assessment and documentation (EHR)
- Crisis intervention and patient advocacy
- Knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid and community resources
Step 4: Get Hired
Target hospital systems, rehab facilities, and dialysis centers, and emphasize any medical, ICU, ED, or oncology experience. On INeedASocialWorker.com you can filter for hospital and medical social work roles, apply with a saved profile, and track every application in one place.
