Senior Resources Resources in Indiana
Last updated September 12, 2026
Indiana offers a wide range of programs to help older adults stay safe, healthy, and as independent as possible. Whether you need help paying for food, utilities, medications, or in-home care, federally funded programs administered through Indiana state agencies and local Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) are the best starting point. Indiana is divided into 16 AAA districts, each providing locally tailored services for adults 60 and older.
If you are unsure where to begin, calling 2-1-1 Indiana (dial 2-1-1 or visit in.211.org) connects you to a trained specialist who can identify programs in your county for food, housing, transportation, caregiver support, and more — at no cost. For immediate crisis support, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) is available 24/7 and has older-adult-aware crisis counselors.
Many Indiana seniors are eligible for multiple programs at once but are enrolled in none. A social worker or benefits counselor at your local AAA can conduct a free benefits checkup to identify everything you may qualify for. Eligibility is often based on age, income, and functional need — not all programs require very low income.
Key programs in Indiana
Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) — via Eldercare Locator
Indiana's 16 regional AAAs coordinate in-home services, meal programs (including home-delivered meals), caregiver support, transportation assistance, legal aid referrals, and case management for adults 60 and older.
How to access: Call the national Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 (Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–8 p.m. ET) or visit eldercare.acl.gov to find your local Indiana AAA by zip code. You can also dial 2-1-1 Indiana for a direct referral.
Indiana Medicaid — Aged & Disabled Waiver (A&D Waiver)
Medicaid in Indiana funds health coverage and, through the Aged & Disabled Waiver, pays for home- and community-based services (personal care, adult day services, respite care) so eligible seniors can remain at home rather than entering a nursing facility.
How to access: Apply through the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) at fssa.in.gov or call 1-800-403-0864. A local Division of Aging service coordinator can help you apply for waiver services specifically.
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
SNAP provides monthly benefits loaded onto an EBT card to help low-income Indiana seniors purchase groceries. Many older adults qualify at higher income limits than they expect, and a simplified application process is available for households with all members 60 or older.
How to access: Apply online through Indiana's Benefits Portal at benefits.in.gov, visit your local Division of Family Resources (DFR) office, or call 1-800-403-0864. Your local AAA may also have staff who can help you apply.
LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program)
Indiana's federally funded LIHEAP program helps eligible low-income seniors pay heating and cooling bills and may cover emergency energy crises or weatherization to reduce energy costs long-term.
How to access: Applications are handled through local community action agencies across Indiana. Contact 2-1-1 Indiana (dial 2-1-1) or visit in.gov/ihcda to find the agency serving your county and learn about current enrollment periods.
Indiana State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)
SHIP provides free, unbiased counseling to Indiana Medicare beneficiaries on Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D, Medigap supplemental insurance, Medicare Savings Programs that reduce premiums, and the Extra Help low-income subsidy for prescription drug costs.
How to access: Call Indiana SHIP at 1-800-452-4800 (TTY: 1-866-846-0139) or visit in.gov/idoi/ship. Counseling is available by phone or in person through local AAAs and senior centers at no cost.
