Washington State offers a broad network of services to help older adults live safely, independently, and with dignity. Whether you need help paying for food and utilities, finding in-home care, or navigating Medicare and Medicaid, local and state agencies are available to connect you with the right support. Most services are coordinated through the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (ALTSA) and a network of Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) spread across the state.
If you are not sure where to start, calling 2-1-1 (dial 2-1-1 or visit wa211.org) is one of the fastest ways to find senior services near you. Trained specialists are available around the clock to connect Washington residents with local food banks, transportation, caregiver respite programs, housing assistance, and much more. The free, confidential Eldercare Locator (1-800-677-1116) is another excellent starting point, linking callers directly to their local AAA.
Navigating senior services can feel overwhelming, especially during a health crisis or sudden change in living situation. Social workers and case managers at your local AAA can provide free options counseling to help older adults and family caregivers understand available choices—from in-home supports to assisted living and adult family homes. Do not wait for a crisis; reaching out early opens up more options.
